For the dough:
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
½ tsp salt
¾ cup warm milk
3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1 egg
For the filling:
½ cup brown sugar
2 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground chai spice (or ½ tsp cinnamon + ½ tsp cardamom)
3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
For the glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2–3 tbsp milk
½ tsp vanilla extract
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir until a dough forms.
Knead the dough for about 5–7 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
Roll the dough into a rectangle (about ¼ inch thick). Spread the softened butter over it.
Mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, and chai spice, then sprinkle over the dough.
Roll the dough tightly and cut into 9–12 rolls.
Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise another 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over warm rolls.
Warm your milk slightly — not too hot, or it might kill the yeast.
Use a sharp knife or dental floss to cut the rolls neatly!
Want a stronger chai flavor? Add a pinch of ground ginger or cloves.
