Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 angel food cake (store-bought or baked from a box mix, cooled)
  • 1 can (540 ml / 18 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1 package (102 g / 3.6 oz) 4-serving instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1½ cups 2% milk
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz Cool Whip (or whipped topping of choice)
  • Sliced almonds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake:
    • Cut the cooled angel food cake into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Layer the Cake:
    • Place half of the cake cubes evenly in the bottom of a 9×9-inch cake pan (metal or glass).
  3. Add Cherry Filling:
    • Spread about ⅔ of the cherry pie filling over the cake layer.
  4. Add the Second Cake Layer:
    • Layer the remaining cake cubes over the cherry filling.
  5. Make the Pudding Layer:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the vanilla pudding mix, milk, and sour cream until smooth (about 2 minutes). Spread this mixture evenly over the cake layer.
  6. Top with Cool Whip:
    • Spread the Cool Whip evenly over the pudding layer. Drop the remaining cherry pie filling on top and gently spread it out.
  7. Chill:
    • Cover the cake and refrigerate for 4-5 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to soak up the creamy layers.
  8. Garnish and Serve:
    • Before serving, sprinkle sliced almonds on top for an optional crunchy garnish.

Notes

  • Cool the Cake Completely: If baking the angel food cake yourself, ensure it’s fully cooled before cutting to prevent warming the other ingredients.
  • Use a Serrated Knife: A serrated knife makes cutting the angel food cake easier and preserves its airy texture.
  • Trifle Bowl Option: For a stunning presentation, layer the ingredients in a trifle bowl to showcase the beautiful layers.
  • Chill Thoroughly: Let the cake chill for at least 4-5 hours (or overnight) for the best flavor and texture.
