Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium yellow onion, grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Creamy Dill Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill (plus extra for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the hamburger steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine grated onion, ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix gently with your hands until just combined.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten into patties about ¾ inch thick.
  2. Cook the patties:
    • Heat olive oil and butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  3. Make the sauce:
    • In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook over low heat for 2 minutes until fragrant.
    • Stir in salt, pepper, and flour until well combined.
    • Pour in the chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Simmer for 2 minutes.
    • Add the heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. Finish the dish:
    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 5-6 minutes, or until heated through and cooked to your desired doneness.
    • Garnish with additional chopped dill and a sprinkle of black pepper.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Don’t overmix the beef: Overmixing can make the patties tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  2. Use fresh dill: Fresh dill adds a bright, herby flavor that complements the creamy sauce beautifully.
  3. Adjust thickness: Keep the patties about ¾ inch thick to ensure they cook evenly and stay juicy.
  4. Scrape the skillet: Don’t forget to scrape up the browned bits from the skillet when making the sauce—it adds tons of flavor!
